Ohio Businesses Reviewing Their PEO Options.

Since 1999 StaffMarket has assisted nearly 20,000 business owners and company executives identify and compare the best PEO alternatives for their companies. Every company considering joining a PEO is unique in their needs and expectations. At the same time, every PEO has their own unique acceptance criteria and only allows companies to join their PEO if the client company meets their requirements for:

  • Preferred business type.
  • Workers' compensation insurance.
  • Company size.
  • Average wage.
  • Ohio and out of state business locations.

For businesses seeking access to group health insurance for their Ohio employees, PEOs may offer a program that helps their customers meet ACA requirements and provides cost advantages over other standard market health insurance alternatives. Once again, every PEO varies in their ability to offer access to Ohio health insurance plans for their client companies.

In Ohio, StaffMarket has helped hundreds of companies quickly identify and assess their best options for joining a PEO. Companies large and small have used StaffMarket to get industry insight and competitive proposals from Professional Employer Organizations operating in Ohio.

This company is a NJ based company that is buying the assets of a C&DD landfill operation in Toledo and they are interested in the idea of utilizing a Professional Employer Organization to administer the EEs of this new, remote operation. Their plan is to close on the deal in about 30 days. They will be working with the current owner to figure which of the current EEs they will be keeping. They don't plan to offer benefits from the start but make sure to discuss options you can offer for them for the future. The clerical EE will be the manager and scalehouse operator. The contact doesn't have any experience with Professional Employer Organizations but I have given her a high-level overview of the service model. This will be considered a new entity, therefore, no underwriting documentation has been requested by me.

This company is a law firm but they run a collection operation that contracts with various Federal, state and local governments and entities. It is important that you realize they are Hub Zone Certified and are required to meet certain benefits and compensation levels to maintain their certification. They currently utilize a payroll company and are now looking into Professional Employer Organization as a way to supplement their internal HR admin as well as the possibility of lowering cost associated with benefit procurement. They are going to require you to complete an NDA so make that your priority for your initial contact. Once the NDA is in place, the company will then supply you directly with the following; Benefits census, current health care plan's coverage summary, invoice and renewal report, signed OH BWC release, recent payroll run summary report, list of all other ancillary benefits provided to their EEs and details on their current time and attendance system. Of course, any other underwriting items you will need you can then request. They are expecting significant growth and told me they estimate being over 100 EEs within the next 12 months. They also expect to add 2 additional sister accounts which could add another 20ish EEs. The sister accounts will be covered under the StaffMarket agreement for this RFP. Please make sure you review all of the requirements listed on this RFP and establish contact as soon as you are able to establish the NDA.

This a non-profit health care facility that is Federal qualified and grant funded. They have recently parted with their past HR director and is looking into alternatives to administering their HR admin needs. Not only are they looking to replace the HR capabilities they lost with that director but they are hopping to find even more competency with a new Professional Employer Organization vendor. They do have some concerns on a Professional Employer Organization relationship inferring with their ability to qualify for grants, so some conversation needs to address those concerns. And of course their are interested in any opportunities to reduce their costs associated with benefits and W/C procurement. They currently utilize a Paychex Flex time and attendance system so a replacement will also need to be discussed. A census, OH BWC release, payroll report, and current Medical Mutual of OH plan documentation are all attached to this RFP. Please make sure you review all of the attached documentation and requirements inventory prior to contact. Also, please make your initial contact by email and request to schedule your initial phone conversation.

This company was recently pitched by a Professional Employer Organization rep and is now interested in obtaining at least one more competitive quote. This company is a manufacturer of folding cartons and air filter frames - they buy paperboard and convert it via printing, die cutting, and folding/gluing. Their growth is up significantly over the past 2 years but face capacity and hiring constraints. They believe their EEs are critical to their success and want to treat them right. They currently offer Anthem coverage which renews in May, but they are not looking for the Professional Employer Organization to quote their group medical at this point. If you feel you have particularly competitive group medical rates at this point, you may want to push to include medical rates in your proposal. An OH BWC release form has been provided to the contact to sign and return. They do have 2 EEs that live in KY but work at the OH facility. And they have one EE that is outside sales in MI and works out of his home.

This company is actually based in OH, but they are looking to engage a Professional Employer Organization for only a new facility in Appleton, WI. The company is a 3PL and has a contract to open a new warehouse facility in Appleton and they must start operations Oct 1st. Their other facilities are union and this new WI facility will not be, and I feel this may play a part in their interest in utilizing a Professional Employer Organization for this new facility. They are interested in the new Professional Employer Organization helping them to recruit the new EEs and supply them with a benefits package. They think they will setup this new facility as a separate entity, but I've gone ahead and collected LRs and W/C dec from current entity.

Company is a local trucking company looking for relief from their high workers comp premium.

This company is an OH based temp to perm truck driver company. Many of their drivers are in OH but they also have drivers around the Midwest. Their primary issue is that they failed to apply for their OH E/Comp discount and this will add over $20,000 to their annualized costs. So they are most interested in a Professional Employer Organization that can provide them back some of that savings for their OH drivers. They average 10 to 15 OH drivers and their OH payroll runs $275,000 to $350,000/yr.

10 Employee Company

This is a small trucking company operating 15 trucks and hauling general type freight. Their drivers do not need to touch the freight since everything is loaded and unloaded by the shipper or receiver and is being hauled inside dry van enclosed 53 ft trailers. The office has 4 employees (total) who are now being paid via w2 through a Professional Employer Organization. The drivers are all considered 1099 independent contractors and they would like to find a way to change that since the laws have recently changed and they'd like to be in full compliance. The company stated that every calculation they have done shows that they may not even be able to financially support such conversion, however they are willing to listen. If they can't afford it they will simply have to declare bankruptcy like many other carriers in the industry.
